As we approach the end of the year, Comer Construction bids farewell to a valued member of our team, Charles T. Petr, who will be retiring on December 19th after nearly 13 years of service. Charles, our dedicated Controller, has left an indelible mark on the company with his commitment to excellence, warmth, and unwavering professionalism.
A Journey of Growth and Achievement
Before joining Comer Construction, Charles had an impressive 29-year career at a nonprofit hospitality college, where he managed everything from tuition and housing to international operations in Ireland. Transitioning to Comer was a new chapter for him, one he embraced wholeheartedly despite having no prior experience in the construction industry.
Guided by the encouragement of his son and drawn by its family-oriented atmosphere, Charles joined Comer Construction in early 2012. Over the years, he has overseen significant transformations, including the move from an outdated accounting system to the modern Foundation Accounting platform. Charles’s efforts have led to the creation of detailed monthly financial reports, comprehensive job cost analyses, and consistent billing meetings, all of which have bolstered the company’s growth and profitability.

A Leader Who Builds Connections
Charles’s impact goes beyond numbers. Known for his approachable demeanor and love of singing, he starts each day with a warm “good morning” to everyone he meets. His collaborative nature has fostered a supportive culture at Comer, where teamwork and mutual respect are paramount.
Reflecting on his role, Charles shared:

He also highlighted the influence of key colleagues, including Bryan from the accounting firm, who supported him during his early days at Comer. His leadership style emphasizes mentoring with kindness, ensuring that no one feels intimidated and everyone learns from challenges.
Looking Ahead
While Charles will miss the camaraderie of his colleagues, he is looking forward to an active retirement. His plans include tutoring at his grandchildren’s school, staying involved in church fundraising, exercising, and honing his cooking skills.
As he steps into this new chapter, Charles leaves behind a legacy of stability, growth, and compassion. His advice to new employees?
“Always respect others, do any job asked of you, and approach challenges with a can-do attitude. Comer is a place where hard work and teamwork truly pay off.”
