Comer Construction is proud to contribute to the renovation and expansion of Northwest Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) in Randallstown, Maryland. As one of Baltimore County’s busiest emergency departments, this $6 million project will improve patient care and streamline operations for both hospital staff and emergency medical services.
When completed, the renovated Emergency Department will feature modernized waiting areas, triage spaces, and a reconfigured layout designed to improve patient flow and privacy. A dedicated ambulance entrance will enable faster EMS handoffs, ensuring quicker care for patients and allowing EMS teams to return to service sooner.
Comer Construction’s involvement in the project began in April 2024 as part of a complete site construction package, including:
- Grading and Excavation: Preparing the site for safe and efficient construction.
- Underground Utilities: Ensuring proper connections and infrastructure to support the expanded facility.
- Roadwork Improvements: Enhancing traffic flow and site accessibility for ambulances and other vehicles.
Underground Utility Installation for Healthcare Projects
Comer Construction has extensive experience helping with site construction for healthcare projects. These projects, like hospitals and emergency departments, depend on uninterrupted utility services to operate effectively. Installing and upgrading underground utilities during expansions requires precision, expertise, and a deep understanding of the unique challenges of these environments.
We take a meticulous approach to underground utility installation, ensuring minimal disruption to critical operations while meeting the highest safety standards. Our services include:
- Water Mains and Connections: Ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply to support critical hospital functions, from patient care to facility operations.
- Sewer Mains and Connections: Installing and upgrading sewer infrastructure to manage waste efficiently while complying with regulatory standards.
- Storm Drainage Systems: Designing and implementing systems to effectively manage runoff, preventing flooding and protecting the facility from water damage during heavy rainfall.
For active healthcare projects like the Northwest Hospital ED Addition, we prioritize collaboration with hospital staff and contractors to coordinate timelines, maintain site safety, and deliver solutions that meet the specific needs of the project.
The Importance of Hydro Excavation
Our Hydro Excavation services are a critical part of our work on projects like Northwest Hospital. This non-destructive excavation method uses pressurized water and a vacuum system to safely and precisely expose underground utilities without causing damage. When working around occupied buildings and essential services, such as an active hospital, hydroexcavation ensures the safety of existing infrastructure and minimizes disruption to ongoing operations.
Underground Utility Installation for Healthcare Projects
After underground utilities are installed, Comer Construction ensures the project is completed with high-quality roadway improvements and pedestrian access enhancements. For healthcare projects like the Northwest Hospital ED Addition, these services are essential to support the increased traffic flow and ensure safe, convenient access for patients, staff, and emergency services.
Our roadwork and paving services include:
- Roadway Improvements: Restoring and upgrading roads to accommodate expanded facilities, ensuring smooth and durable surfaces for vehicles, including ambulances and delivery trucks.
- Pedestrian Access Enhancements: Constructing or upgrading sidewalks, crosswalks, and pathways to provide safe, ADA-compliant access for patients and visitors.
- Traffic Flow Optimization: Implementing solutions to enhance vehicle circulation and reduce congestion around the site.
To minimize disruptions during construction, Comer Construction provides in-house maintenance of traffic (MOT) services, ensuring traffic flow is maintained safely and efficiently. Our team develops and implements detailed MOT plans, using signage, barriers, and alternative routing to protect pedestrians and drivers while keeping the project on track.
With a focus on quality, safety, and accessibility, Comer Construction’s roadwork and paving services help create a functional and welcoming environment for all who visit and work at healthcare facilities.
